The headquarters of the PuntuEUS Foundation to be located in Elgoibar
The Town Council and PuntuEUS have signed a ten-year contract
Ana Beitia, the Head of Elgoibar Town Council, and Iñaki Goirizelaia, the Chairman of the PuntuEUS Foundation, have signed a ten-year contract. As a result of this agreement, the headquarters of the PuntuEUS Foundation will be located at the Altzolatarren Dorretxea building in the town of Elgoibar (Gipuzkoa, Basque Country).
The PuntuEUS Foundation was set up in 2012 in Donostia-San Sebastian in the presence of the ICANN to submit a request for the .EUS domain. It has been the organisation responsible for controlling and managing .EUS since the domain became reality in 2014. This year it will be 5 years since the first .EUS websites were launched and nearly 10,000 domain names have been achieved.
The PuntuEUS Foundation is working to turn Basque into a top-level language in the digital environment. The main aim is to make the Basque language valid, useful and visible in the digital environment through the domain.
Elgoibar Town Council agrees with the aims of the PuntuEUS Foundation, and through this collaboration agreement is happy to lease the first floor of the Altzolatarren Dorretxea building to the PuntuEUS Foundation to enable it to continue its activity there.
Elgoibar Town Council is the owner of the Altzolatarren Dorretxea. It is a tower house built in the 17th century. The building was renovated towards the end of the 20th century and owing to its historical and artistic value was designated a monument through a document dated 17 January, 1964.
Targeting the digital environment
As a result of this relocation, the PuntuEUS Foundation is keen for its work to exert an impact on the town of Elgoibar. Its aim is to influence the digital environment in collaboration with the organisations and citizens of Elgoibar in order to promote Basque language use.
As a starting point, PuntuEUS will be helping, in collaboration with Elgoibarko Izarra and Elgoibar Town Council, to organise the 11th edition of the Euskara ala Ezkara congress. The digital environment will be the focus of this year’s edition of the congress dealing with the Basque language and Basque culture.
