The award will be presented on September 24 at an official ceremony to be held at 18:00 at the Santa Teresa Convent in Donostia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>As the jury announced, \u201cHarritxu Gete, a researcher at the Vicomtech technology center dedicated to speech and language technologies, has shown a firm commitment to the goals of the Gladys Award throughout her professional career. Her work has been fundamental in developing the neural machine translation tools currently used for Basque, and she has integrated a gender perspective into her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jury highlighted Harritxu&#8217;s efforts to bring equality to the technology field and strengthen the digital presence of Basque: \u201cIn recent years, she has made a special effort to serve as an inspiration for young women through outreach in media and various conferences. In addition, her future potential was highlighted: on the one hand, leading key projects whose work directly impacts society upon application, and on the other, ensuring her commitment to outreach serves both to disseminate her work and act as a reference for young women.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PROFILE AND CAREER<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harritxu Gete Ugarte holds a degree in Mathematics from UPV\/EHU. After completing a master&#8217;s degree in Language Analysis and Processing (receiving the best academic record award), she defended her doctoral thesis in Language Analysis and Processing in 2025, earning a Cum Laude distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her entire professional career has been tied to the Vicomtech foundation. She started as an intern, continued as an assistant researcher, and currently works as a researcher in automatic translation and large language models (LLMs). She has participated in various research projects, including serving as technical lead for the TANDO project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BASQUE AND RESPONSIBLE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the main pillars of Gete&#8217;s work has been promoting the digital development of Basque and minority languages. She participated in developing and training the machine translation systems Itzuli (Basque Government) and Batua (Vicomtech)\u2014strategic tools handling over 300,000 translation requests daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, she has addressed the ethical and inclusive use of technology in her research, analyzing gender bias in machine translation and presenting her findings at major scientific conferences and international journals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WOMEN&#8217;S PRESENCE AND COMMITMENT TO SCIENCE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As highlighted by the jury, Gete has a long-standing commitment to social awareness and gender equality. She is a mentor in the Inspira STEAM program, volunteers with Emakumeak Zientzian, and has participated in various talks and panel discussions to create female role models for young women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AWARD CEREMONY AND PRESENTATION OF NEW VIDEOPODCAST<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year&#8217;s award ceremony will take place on September 24 at 18:00 at the Santa Teresa Convent in Donostia&#8217;s Old Town. This year&#8217;s award ceremony will introduce a novel feature: the launch of a new videopodcast promoted jointly by EITB, PUNTUEUS, and the Faculty of Computer Science at UPV\/EHU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This new series will showcase the essential role of women in the digital and technological sectors through their own voices, portraying them not only as tech professionals, but as multifaceted individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ABOUT THE GLADYS AWARD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Promoted by the PUNTUEUS Foundation and the UPV\/EHU Faculty of Computer Science, this initiative is sponsored primarily by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, with support from Emakunde, Danobatgroup, the Euskaltel Foundation, EITB, and the UPV\/EHU Equality Directorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gladys Award aims to honor young Basque women working in the digital field, create role models for youth, and highlight their work while honoring the memory of computer scientist Gladys del Estal.
