Lorea Argarate Zubia (Bilbao, 1990), a technologist, science communicator, and musician from Bilbao, will receive this year’s Gladys Award at a ceremony to be held on September 26 at the Faculty of Informatics of UPV/EHU (San Sebastián). The jury praised her entrepreneurship, her science communication work, and her extensive career when announcing her as the award recipient.
A TECHNOLOGIST WITH A PASSION FOR MUSIC
Lorea Argarate Zubia (1990) was born in Bilbao and currently resides in Berlin. Although she began her studies in physics, she graduated as a telecommunications engineer (University of Deusto, 2016). She holds a postgraduate degree in industrial organization (University of Deusto, 2017) and two master’s degrees: one in Big Data & BI (University of Deusto, 2017) and another in teacher training (VIU, 2018). She also completed a Blockchain program at the University of Deusto (2018). Currently, she is an entrepreneur at the TAZEBAEZ cooperative, working on digitalization and innovation processes in education both in Berlin and Bilbao.
Her deep passion for music initially led her to study physics, intending to learn acoustics. However, she did not complete these studies at the time and switched to telecommunications engineering, specializing in sound and image. In this field, she discovered the digital world and programming.
After completing her degree, she decided to explore other fields and pursued master’s degrees in industrial organization and Big Data. It was then that she began working at Deustotech. Due to her strong connection with education and scientific outreach, she also earned a master’s degree in teacher training to strengthen her foundation.
From a young age, Argarate has been immersed in promoting science and technology, connecting with both local and international communities and sharing knowledge. She has been deeply involved with the STEAM approach and had the opportunity to witness the inception of the InspiraSTEAM project, focusing on the impact that can be made on young girls.
She participated in the creation of the “White Mirror / Tech for Good” exponential technologies for well-being program. She has collaborated with various organizations, including PUNTUEUS, Elhuyar, and GAZTEA.
Despite her youth, she has taken part in numerous forums and is often invited to speak about the digital environment. Most of her content is produced in Basque, aimed at young people, in a format and language that resonates with them. Lorea integrates a gender perspective into her projects, breaking stereotypes, showcasing new professions, and inspiring others.
She has developed a career as a clarinetist, but in recent years, she is better known for her work in electronic music. She was a member of the music project Las Tea Party DJs and the group Mazmorra. Currently, she is part of “Mauriziak ez du inor hil” and also performs solo under the name hamaika.
