USUE MORI TO RECEIVE THE 5th GLADYS AWARD
The award ceremony will take place on September 26 at the EHU Faculty of Computer Science

Usue Mori Carrascal (Donostia, 1987) is the winner of the 5th Gladys Award. The jury reached the decision unanimously and announced it today, September 16. The award will be presented on September 26 at a ceremony at the EHU Faculty of Computer Science in Donostia.
According to the jury’s statement: “Usue Mori has a solid scientific career; however, she has moved away from the current ‘elite’ research model and has prioritised using artificial intelligence as a tool for social benefit and knowledge transfer. To achieve this, she has fostered collaboration not only with other research groups at the Faculty but also with professionals from diverse fields. Her work is expected to have a positive social impact in the future.”
PROFILE AND CAREER
Usue Mori Carrascal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at EHU, and since September 2024 she has also been the coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence. She holds a degree in Mathematics and has completed several master’s degrees, including in mathematical modelling, intelligent systems, and education. She has been teaching at the university since 2015.
Beyond her strong academic trajectory, Mori has made a bold choice to go beyond conventional academic research. Her aim is not only to increase the
number of scientific publications but to adapt artificial intelligence to society’s real needs and put knowledge into practice.
KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER AND COMMITMENT
The jury highlighted her work in favour of knowledge transfer. Mori’s projects reinforce the social perspective of artificial intelligence and translate research results into practice so that society can directly benefit. Her work shows that research does not need to remain confined to academia and that transformative technologies can be put at the service of society.
The transfer of AI is taking place in various social fields, while also encouraging the participation and engagement of many people. In this line of work, she combines collaboration and reflection, training and practical applications, with the aim of developing responsible and accessible technology.
The jury stressed that she tackles the question “Artificial Intelligence: where from, how and for what purpose?” and explores pathways towards a better digital society, from a fair, responsible, and accessible perspective. Her work may mark the beginning of processes with positive future impact, grounded in a social and collaborative vision, always incorporating a gender perspective and cooperation.

The initiative promoted by the PUNTUEUS Foundation and the EHU Faculty of Computer Science has the main sponsorship of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and is supported by Emakunde, Danobatgroup, Euskaltel Foundation, EITB and the EHU Equality Office.
The Gladys Award seeks to recognise young Basque-speaking women in the digital sphere, create role models for younger generations, and highlight their work, while also honouring computer scientist Gladys del Estal. The award ceremony will be held on September 26 at 11:30 am at the EHU Faculty of Computer Science.
